Back to The Camps

Auschwitz was a concentration/death camp which was established in 1940 and permanently closed forever in 1945. It was the biggest death camp out of all the Nazi concentration camps. The camp was created by Heinrich Himmler. Over four million people were killed in just this camp by the Nazis and SS soldiers.

After getting off the harsh and cruel train ride, Jews would walk through this gate with the giant steel sign that read, "ARBEIT MACHT FREI" which ment, " work makes you free." The ironic thing about the sign is that after you worked for a certain time, they would simply shoot you into a mass grave.
